A Montessori fine-motor toy handmade in Latvia. Two beech cylinders in a birch block, one for the palmar grasp and one for the pincer grip.

Two cylinders, two stages of a growing hand. One is made for the palmar grasp, the whole-fist hold babies start with around five to six months. The other is made for the pincer grip, the thumb-and-finger pinch that arrives closer to nine to twelve months.

Together they let you follow one small hand as it goes from grabbing to pinching, the same journey that leads, eventually, to holding a crayon.

Care

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry straight away; no soaking, no dishwasher.
Once a year (or when the wood looks thirsty), rub in a drop of food-safe oil or beeswax balm with a soft cloth.
Wood is a living material: small shifts in grain and tone are part of the toy, not a fault.
